England and Saracens number eight, Billy Vunipola, has withdrawn from the Lions tour to New Zealand with a shoulder injury.

Vunipola ruling himself out of upcoming Lions tour is a serious cause for concern for the Lions, as the England back-rower was a leading Test candidate.

A statement from Lions head coach Warren Gatland confirmed, "Billy has been carrying an injury and feels he wouldn't be able to contribute fully to the Tour and needs further medical treatment."

Vunipola was drafted back into the international team following four months on the sidelines with a knee injury and this latest injury setback is a hammer-blow that has ended any hopes of him playing during this tour.

The Lions play their first match of the New Zealand tour on 3rd June with the first Test three weeks later.

James Haskell of Wasps has been drafted in to replace him and will join up with the squad after the Premiership final on 27th May.

Vunipola is the second withdrawal from the Lions squad, after Ben Youngs pulled out for personal reasons. Youngs was replaced by Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw.

The upcoming Lions tour will be Warren Gatland’s third but the first to his native New Zealand. Not only will Gatland and co come up against the double world champions, but a team that no Lions squad has defeated in a full series since 1971. The last time the Lions ran out victors of a single test versus New Zealand was back in June of 1993.

New Zealand is one of the greatest rugby playing nations of all-time, a squad of the highest calibre, who have won the Rugby Championship (formerly the Tri Nations) four times in the last five years.
